Child Dedication @ Walton Christian Church is a moment of giving thanks to God for the gift of a son/daughter. It’s also a moment of professing intent to nurture a son/daughter in faith by his/her parents. 

 

Child Dedication is not the same as baptism. Baptism (in WCC’s tradition) is a decision made by one’s own accord (at an older age) to publicly confess Jesus as Lord and Savior. Child Dedication is a decision made by a child’s parents to seek God’s blessing upon their child and to profess their intent to nurture their child in faith and love as the child matures. In dedicating a child, we follow the example of various folks in the Bible. Hannah (1 Samuel 1:27-28) dedicated her son Samuel to God at a young age. And Jesus was dedicated to God (Luke 2) by his parents in the Temple as a young child. Scripture also says this: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” (Deuteronomy 6:5-9)

Child Dedication usually happens during a Sunday morning service. Parents will be asked to affirm the following statements:

• Are you committed to creating a nurturing, spiritual environment in your home?
• Are you committed to be parents of faith in Christ, recognizing your children are more likely to follow God’s path by the model they first observe in you?
• Are you committed to parent with patience, recognizing that nurturing your daughter/son is a loving act that requires time, prayer, and faith in God?
